I had someone tell me once in order to "sell" (sell a car, house, book) you first have to sell yourself to other people. If people like you they will "buy" from you. I don't agree. I think you should sell yourself to yourself first. My mom use to say all the time, "It matters what other people think." I think she meant, you have to dress a certain way, act a certain way, and be a certain way. I don't want to conform to the norm. How boring would that be?
I want to wear a flower in my hair and not worry about what everyone says. I want to wear that hat that looks good with my jeans. I want to look at you at the red light and sing at the top of my lungs, play my air guitar and point at you (why should I stop when I pulled up, I was doing it before?) I want to build an eclectic wall behind my house (don't ask). I was to wear stripes and plaid at the same time. I want to get up and dance when the band plays my favorite song, even though I cant dance a lick! I want to show the world how awesome it is just to be me. Psst I do all these things...just wait until you see me at the red light.
Things I strive for in my photography is to show you, the real you. Times are changing. I don't have portraits hanging in my home of all of us in white shirts sitting all pretty in a row, "cheesin." Why cant it be you wearing that thing you bought that hangs in the back of the closet? That hat you bought because Ne-Yo had it in his Closer video? You playing the air guitar? How many times are you going to wear that dress you paid just a little more for? That suit you wore to your cousins wedding? You never wear but know you look good in it.
THAT is the kind of photography I want hanging in my house. Sell yourself to the rest of the world. Show them who you are. Its ok to let go, even if it is only for an hour with me...Until then

Well, girly, you know me from way back, and quite honestly, I was never the norm. I never had a clique, per say. I had friends in all groups - to quote the beloved John Hughes, brain, basket case, prom queen, you get the idea.
ReplyDeleteI never believed that you should have to conform to be accepted. Be who you are and the rest will follow. As you may or may not have noticed, Brandy K, you have a lot of followers. :) They like you for you.
Oh yeah... and they like your talents too. :) Keep rockin' out at that light girlfriend and maybe, one day, I'll get back to dance with ya, 'cause I can't dance a lick either! That's one of the MANY reasons we love ya ... Individuality ROCKS!! :)
Girl when you get back we will def dance a jig! Right on the BCHS parking lot while blasting some Loverboy!! :)
